For fund managers pitching RIA platforms, one sponsor relationship can open several distribution doors at once. Dakota tracked 205 announced US RIA transactions in the first half of 2026, representing roughly $400.7B in client AUM, and a small group of sponsors sits behind many of the platforms doing the buying.
Mega-platforms already run centralized approval lists. Mid-market platforms are still building theirs, and they tend to move faster on decisions. That makes the sponsors behind several mid-market platforms worth knowing. Here are three of them.
Wealth Partners Capital Group (WPCG) and HGGC back three platforms that appear on Dakota’s list of emerging RIA aggregators to watch:
Waverly is also the platform to watch for a sponsor change. It is pursuing a recapitalization, with Ardea running the process as of July 2026. For a manager, an existing relationship with either sponsor can carry across all three platforms.
Carlyle has built exposure across the RIA market at several different scales:
CAPTRUST sits in the mega-platform tier, so the approach there looks different from the mid-market platforms. Prime Capital and MAI are the clearer mid-market-to-large examples.
Constellation shows up across several mid-sized platforms in Dakota Marketplace:
Constellation took over as Merit’s backer from WPCG and HGGC in 2025.
The practical takeaway is to target the same manager across multiple platforms backed by the same sponsor. Dakota’s Episode 33 discussion put it this way: reaching Waverly, Apella, and MCF under WPCG and HGGC can yield multiple distribution channels with coordinated outreach, rather than three separate cold pitches.
Timing matters too. These platforms are still decentralized, so acquired practices tend to keep their existing manager relationships. That window narrows once a platform reaches $100B in AUM or gets folded into a mega-platform, at which point approved lists can consolidate to around fifty strategists. Getting in before that point means a very different relationship than pitching in two years.
A change in ownership changes the conversation, so these three are worth tracking:
Deal structure matters as well. Majority buyouts still lead at roughly 60% to 65% of deal volume, but minority stakes, continuation vehicles, and sponsor-to-sponsor recaps leave existing relationships in place longer, which gives managers more time to build.
Dakota Marketplace covers 17,000+ registered investment advisers and 46,000+ verified RIA contacts, along with the sponsor and portfolio company relationships behind them. Fundraising teams use it to see which sponsors back which platforms, track ownership changes as they happen, and plan outreach across a sponsor’s whole portfolio of RIAs.
