Institutional investors kept putting capital to work in US equities in Q3 2026, and investment consultants played a central role in deciding mandate size, style and manager selection. Pension systems were rebalancing and reassessing their concentration in mega-cap stocks, and consultant-led commitments showed public equity still anchors long-term portfolios.

Over the quarter, consultants steered capital across the market-cap spectrum, from large cap core and value to mid cap, SMID and small cap. Small cap was the clear standout, accounting for more than half of all commitments as pensions hired active value and growth managers alongside low-cost index exposure. Large state systems and county retirement plans drove most of the activity, pairing sizable single-manager mandates with targeted small cap allocations.

Quarter-in-Review: Consultant Influence & Allocation Activity

During Q3 2026, consultants including RVK, Meketa Investment Group, NEPC, Callan Associates, Marquette Associates, Wainwright Investment Counsel, Asset Consulting Group, Cambridge Associates, Mariner Institutional and Neuberger Berman Group together guided roughly $4.29 billion into US equity commitments across 18 pension systems. Small cap strategies captured nearly $2 billion of that total across 15 commitments. Large cap core, value and blend mandates added another $1.4 billion, and a single all cap core mandate accounted for $735 million.

Small Cap Conviction Leads the Quarter

Consultant-led activity in Q3 2026 showed US equities remain a core building block of institutional portfolios. It also showed where consultants see opportunity right now: in the parts of the market that mega-cap-heavy indexes leave behind. Consultants matched pension systems with specialist small cap value and growth managers, often hiring both styles side by side, and used index products for efficient core exposure.

One theme ran through RVK’s $1.2 billion small cap build-out at New Mexico, Meketa’s all cap mandate at DC and county plans adding targeted SMID and small cap managers. Consultants put deliberate style diversification and active management where it can add the most value ahead of passive concentration. With roughly $4.29 billion allocated during the quarter, US equities remain a strategically supported allocation, and consultants are actively reshaping how pensions get that exposure.
