So you accepted the premise. The consultant controls access, and you need that relationship before the pension scheme will take you seriously. You found the right firm, sent a thoughtful note to the consultant whose name was on the referral, and heard nothing back.
The problem is that you treated the consultant as one door. It isn’t. A UK investment consultant is several functions inside one firm, and the person who rates your fund is almost never the person who sits in front of the client. Approaching the wrong function first is the most common way a well-researched UK outreach effort goes quiet.
In this article, we’ll cover who inside a consultant actually decides whether you get rated, who recommends you to schemes once you are, why the asset class you raise for changes who you should be talking to, and what order to run the whole thing in.
Dakota Marketplace tracks 1,300+ contacts across 95 UK consultant firms. Look inside any one of them and the structure is consistent.
Take Redington, which advises on $500B+. Its team splits into manager research analysts covering specific asset classes, field consultants who own client relationships, investment consulting staff running the advisory work, asset-class specialists in private markets and real assets, and separate defined benefit and defined contribution consulting functions.
Those are not variations on the same job. A manager research analyst and a field consultant have different mandates, different incentives, and different reasons to care about your fund. Sending the same email to both is how managers end up concluding that UK consultants are unresponsive.
Start with manager research. This is the function that evaluates funds, assigns ratings, and determines whether you appear on a buy list at all.
At Redington alone, the research function includes roles like Head of Manager Research, Director of Fund Research, and dedicated researchers for private credit and equities. These people exist to meet managers. Evaluating funds is the job, not an interruption to it, which makes them the most accessible part of a consultant and the part most US managers skip.
The sequence matters more than the effort. A field consultant cannot recommend a fund the research team has not rated, so a relationship built with the client-facing side before you have a rating produces goodwill and no mandates. Research first, always.

Manager research inside UK consultants is organised by asset class, not generalised. Dakota Marketplace shows dedicated private credit researchers, real assets research partners, equity fund research heads and private markets directors sitting side by side in the same firm.
For a fund manager this is good news, because it narrows the target considerably. You are not trying to get the attention of a consultant. You are trying to get the attention of the one person at that firm who covers your asset class, and that person is identifiable by name.
It also means a rating in one asset class does not travel. A firm rated in infrastructure that launches a private credit strategy starts the research process again with a different person.
Identify which consultants advise your target schemes first, because that determines which firms are worth the effort at all. A consultant with no clients in your strategy is a poor use of a quarter regardless of how large they are.
Then find the researcher covering your asset class at each of those firms and open the conversation there. Expect it to be slow. Consultant research coverage takes time to obtain and compounds once you have it, which is precisely why it functions as a barrier to managers who start the process late.
Once rated, move to the field consultants covering your target schemes, and use open searches to prioritise. A consultant running a live mandate in your strategy is a conversation worth having now. The same consultant with nothing open is a relationship to maintain.
Only then does the direct approach to the scheme make sense, and by that point it is not a cold approach at all.
Dakota Marketplace covers 1,300+ contacts across 95 UK consultant firms, with titles, roles, asset class coverage and direct contact details, alongside the consultant relationship mapping that shows which adviser covers each scheme.
European Investment Mandates adds the timing layer: which consultants are running which searches, for which clients, and whether the window is open.
