Knowing that existing holders make warmer prospects is only useful once it turns into an actual list you can work. Dakota Marketplace's 13F data is built to do exactly that: turn a broad universe of filers into a ranked, filterable list of firms already holding something close to what you are raising.

Start With Product Structure, Not Just Account Type

Dakota Marketplace tracks 6,891 accounts filing 13F reports, 3,169 of them RIAs. Filtering that universe down starts with the structure you are raising, not the account type. Across the filings tracked in Marketplace, there are 59,929 individual holding records tied to BDCs and 292,606 tied to closed-end funds. A manager raising a new BDC can filter directly to the RIAs, family offices, or institutions that show an existing BDC position, rather than starting from every 13F filer and guessing which ones are relevant.

Rank by Position Size, Not Just Presence

A firm holding a token position in a comparable structure is a different prospect than one with meaningful exposure. Dakota's data shows position size alongside the filing itself, which means a list can be ranked by how large an existing holding is relative to the rest of that filer's reported portfolio. A firm with a small, incidental BDC position is a colder call than one where BDCs make up a real slice of the book.

Layer in Account Type and Geography

Once a list is filtered by product structure and ranked by position size, account type and metro area narrow it further. An RIA in a target metro area with an existing BDC position and a sizable AUM base is a fundamentally different outreach priority than an out-of-region filer with a marginal holding. Dakota Marketplace lets these filters stack, so the final list reflects all three dimensions at once rather than one criterion applied in isolation.

Dakota Marketplace tracks 6,891 accounts filing 13F reports, with roughly 47,000 verified contacts at RIA accounts alone. Fund managers use Marketplace to filter by:

  • Existing 13F holdings by product structure (BDC, closed-end fund, ETF, common stock, and more)
  • Position size and filing history by account
  • Account type, AUM, and metro area for the filer
