Canadian pension plans achieved a 1.5% median return in Q1 2025 despite market volatility, according to Northern Trust Canada. While US equities declined 4.2% in CAD terms—the worst since Q2 2022—international equities, particularly in China and Brazil, along with bonds and gold, helped support returns. John Ritter was hired to lead Texas Municipal Retirement System’s real assets program. Investment moves included Delaware Public Employees' Retirement System reallocating $200M from BlackRock into Advent GPE XI and Durable Capital. Howard County, Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, and City of Holyoke announced private market commitments and new manager searches.
Private equity-backed RIA activity surged as Great Hill Partners invested in Mission Wealth ($10.7B AUM) and 119th Street Capital backed Maridea Wealth Management ($470M). TritonPoint Wealth, supported by Dynasty Financial Partners, is pursuing multiple Maryland-based deals. Allworth Financial’s $1.5B acquisition of Sheaff Brock and CW Advisors’ purchases of Wolf Group and Parsons Capital added $1.4B in AUM. Schechter Investment Advisors acquired Enlightened Finance, and Cetera’s Retirement Planning Group added $180M through three acquisitions. Other notable moves included Global Wealth Management, Savant Wealth, and Lido Advisors. New RIAs launched include SanWealth Partners, Truman Wealth Advisors, and Elevated Wealth.
Apollo Global Management closed its debut secondaries fund at $5.4B, while Morgan Stanley Investment Management launched the North Haven Private Assets Fund, its first evergreen PE offering. Other recent secondaries launches include StepStone Real Estate ($4.5B), Pantheon ($5.2B), and Generali Investments. Vista Equity Partners raised $4B for a continuation fund backing Cloud Software Group. Ara Partners closed its inaugural infrastructure fund at $800M, and Power Sustainable secured $330M for a decarbonization-focused PE strategy. TA Associates took a minority stake in Kline Hill Partners, and leadership hires at Eldridge Capital, Danu Venture Group, and Crescent Capital Group reflect expanding talent in alts.
