Key Takeaways For Fundraisers & Private Fund Managers

  • Arctos is close to running out of NFL room. Arctos has four of the six private equity deals struck or proposed since the NFL let PE in two years ago. If owners approve its $10.6B Falcons deal in October, Arctos will hold stakes in four of the six teams a single firm is allowed, which leaves room for at most two more deals under the current rules. Meanwhile, Carlyle, Dynasty and Ludis are still approved but haven't closed a single deal.
  • PE is joining NFL deals but isn't setting the prices. Minority stakes sold to PE firms climbed from $8.1B (Dolphins) to $10.6B (Falcons, pending), but the highest marks came from individual buyers. The Koch family paid over $10B for 10% of the Giants, and Xiaomi co-founder Lin Bin took 1% of the Dolphins at $12.5B.
  • Capital is moving beyond franchise ownership. A consortium led by L Catterton bought majority control of Hyrox at about €600M. Carlyle, Bain Capital and Oaktree bid on 10-20% of Serie A's international media rights, and Bain Capital Credit gave Playfly a $250M credit facility. Leagues, rights and platforms are becoming investment targets in their own right.
